Public Workshop scheduled for September 2011

A public workshop is proposed in early fall 2011 to develop a Beaufort Rail Trail Master Plan.  The workshop will be held concurrently with the City of Beaufort’s Sectors 2 and 3 charrettes which cover the neighborhoods spanning the Ribaut Road Corridor.  The master plan will address such issues as trail width, paving material, trailheads, connecting pathways and the how the trail integrates with the surrounding neighborhoods, businesses, schools, shops and parks.  This is a tremendous opportunity to help shape the vision for the Beaufort Rail Trail.  Specific dates and times will be announced.

This project will be a great thing for all of the citizens of Beaufort. Walkers, businesses, residents and bikers all can have a seat at this community table. Let’s make sure we keep the public in our public pathways. As a long time advocate of the use of this corridor for everyones benefit this effort could not be more welcome.

I have been eagerly awaiting this for a long time. This would be better than the running/ biking path that parallels Rt. 278 on Hilton Head because it would be away from the main traffic of Ribaut. Is there a plan for the train caboose located near the end of Depot road.?

WE are familar with Rails to Trails in Maryland and they are great chances for businesses too with bike rentals and refreshment places etc as the trails grow. Look to other states for ideas and be imaginative.

Why is the trail not going all the way into Old Town Port Royal ?

Couldn’t be a better use for that land. Route 21, leading into Beaufort bespeaks a territory of trailer parks and town dumps. This refreshing new turn in the vision of Beaufort is very welcome to those of us who often walk the tracks to remember why we chose to live near the Beaufort marshes.

Having an open and transparent process, having a public website, getting public input along the way on a host of issues is a very smart and appropriate way to move this important project forward.
Keep up the good work and hats off to you folks.
